The IQ tests are here actually to measure the IQ of a particular person. We may never know a real IQ of a dead person or a living genius. But since IQ correlates with talent and creativity and we know the rarity or particular IQ we may only estimate it. Some people use stylometry (measuring IQ from the complexity of written text) but the whole thing is pseudo-scientific in my opinion. Persons believed to have higher IQs than someone else can easily have lower IQs than their counterparts and vice versa. Please note the rarity is calculated for the current number of people living on this planet (in 2023). My estimates are also based on the fact that most of the prodigies are living in developing countries so they have little opportunity to show their gift and a lot of people have stratospheric IQs and show no real abilities (yes, psychometrics is not an exact science). So here are my estimates:
John von Neumann – IQ of 190 (99.9999999010 % or 1 in 1,009,976,678); his prodigious abilities were the subject of awe by other top mathematicians; von Neumann may have been one of the most intelligent people that have ever lived
Albert Einstein – IQ of 183 (99.9999984250 % or 1 in 63,492,548); lots of people assume his IQ was only 160 but given his prodigious talent for physics I guess his IQ was much higher (talent is clearly connected with IQ); you also need a robust cognitive apparatus for scientific research (for example; putting 70 things in you head simultaneously)
Mark Zuckerberg – IQ of 156 (99.9905490555 % or 1 in 10,581); there is no doubt people in the tech industry possess stratospheric IQ that helps them to program the most complex things; however given the rarity of higher IQs are connected I assume Mr. Zuckerberg an IQ of 156
Stephen Hawking – IQ of 180 (99.9999951684 % or 1 in 20,696,863) – a genius with a huge talent for physics and his IQ might have matched that of Albert Einstein
Isaac Newton – IQ of 187 (99.9999996674 % or 1 in 300,656,786) – undoubtedly a prodigy, but I don’t believe his IQ matched that of von Neumann
Bill Gates – IQ of 180 (99.9999951684 % or 1 in 20,696,863) – since he had overseen the work of his subordinates, perfectly understands the top echelons of computation science, and resolved a difficult mathematical problem, I put his IQ as 180. Also, note that he is one of the smartest Americans that have ever lived
Steve Jobs – IQ of 150 (99.9570883466 % or 1 in 2,330) – technological geniuses have enormously high IQ but his IQ wasn’t so high in my estimate as people propose
Elon Musk – IQ of 162 (99.9982112841 % or 1 in 55,906) – Mr. Musk is a top engineer and executive with multi-talents connected to his IQ
Kevin Mitnick – IQ of 183 (99.9999984250 % or 1 in 63,492,548) – one of the best hackers that have ever lived; Kevin Mitnick had undoubtedly enormous talent for information technologies but his talent was definitely derived from his IQ
George Soros – IQ of 135 (99.0184693146% or 1 in 102) – you are definitely right to wonder that I estimate such a low IQ among these titans of “g factor” mental capacity; he is a great theorist with an extreme talent for it; however, given the fact he didn’t perform so miraculously in formal education system, his IQ is so “low”; but his IQ may be higher but his studies weren’t so good
Warren Buffett – IQ of 151 (99.9663019177% or 1 in 2,968) – one of the most legendary investors ever; Mr. Buffett proved his mental abilities (especially memory) and he doesn’t need computer because he is making the calculations himself
Cardinal Richelieu – IQ of 163 (99.9986645903% or 1 in 74,883) – he is considered one of the most skilled politicians of all time. They gave him little power, he suddenly commenced to rule all of them
Nikola Tesla – IQ of 173 (99.9999431733% or 1 in 1,759,737) – a prodigy in a time when there were not many engineers; his talent would fit our age, but there are people raised from poverty and educated now, so he would not be famous.
Alan Turing – IQ of 175 (99.9999712895% or 1 in 3,483,046) was a British mathematician, logician, and computer pioneer. He broke the German Enigma code during World War II and laid the foundation for modern computing and artificial intelligence. His mathematical abilities were exceptional — he combined deep abstract reasoning with practical problem-solving, creating concepts like the “Turing machine,” which still defines what it means for a computation to be possible.
Sam Altman – IQ of 157 (99.9927627566% or 1 in 13,817) – is an American tech entrepreneur and the former CEO of OpenAI, known for pushing the development of advanced artificial intelligence. He combines strategic thinking with strong fundraising and organizational skills, which helped him shape some of the most influential directions in modern tech.
Jeff Bezos – IQ of 158 (99.9944812644% or 1 in 18,120) – he is the founder of Amazon and one of the most influential business strategists of the modern era. His businness skills are derrived from his IQ
Peter Thiel – IQ of 155 (99.9877101029% or 1 in 8,137) – a genius of Silicon Valley and a powerful man, yet we must not overestimate his abilities
Ray Kurzweil – IQ of 159 (99.9958094411% or 1 in 23,863) – an inventor, futurist, and AI theorist known for his highly influential predictions about technology and human longevity
Karl Popper – IQ of 144 (99.8323213712% or 1 in 596) – notable, philosophically prominent, and highly influential, yet I do not estimate his IQ as very high. Not only were his talents not exceptional enough, but his raw ability did not match those of truly higher-IQ individual
Richard Dawkins – IQ of 128 (96.9025987934% or 1 in 32) – he did not create the theory of the selfish gene — W. D. Hamilton did. Dawkins gained prominence not only because of his wit but also because of clientelist ties and prominent publication circles. Of course, he is a very talented writer and orator. I am highly convinced his Verbal IQ is far higher than his Performance IQ (this happens in highly intelligent people), since Dawkins himself noted that mathematics is not for him.
Carl Sagan – IQ of 178 (99.9999900166% or 1 in 10,016,587) – was an astronomer, science communicator, and visionary thinker who helped popularize the cosmos for millions of people. His mental abilities were marked by an exceptional blend of scientific rigor, poetic imagination, and unusually clear communication. He excelled at synthesizing complex ideas into simple, emotionally powerful explanations that shaped modern scientific literacy.
Isaac Asimov – 170 (99.9998467663% or 1 in 652,598) – was a prolific writer and biochemist whose range across science fiction, history, and popular science was extraordinary. His prodigious abilities came from an exceptional memory, rapid analytical thinking, and a rare capacity to explain complex ideas with perfect clarity.
Angela Merkel – IQ of 146 (99.8917630764% or 1 in 924) – she studied physics and was one of the last truly intelligent politicians among the incompetent ones
Henry Kissinger – IQ of 151 (99.9663019177% or 1 in 2,968) – nobody voted for him, yet he was so intelligent and so talented in politics that he had his say for an unbelievably long time. Remembering political situations both in reality and in the censored press, my estimation of his IQ is so high.
Quentin Tarantino – IQ of 161 (99.9976142490% or 1 in 41,916) – a filmmaker known for his distinctive storytelling, sharp dialogue, and encyclopedic knowledge of cinema; the truth is that he learned film theories just by watching movies, therefore IQ so high
Napoleon Bonaparte – IQ of 179 (99.9999930398% or 1 in 14,367,357) – was a military strategist and state-builder whose speed of thinking and grasp of complex battlefield dynamics were extraordinary. His prodigious abilities included rapid calculation, intense focus, and an unusual talent for reading both terrain and human psychology. He was a multitalented person who would have succeeded in banks, corporations, investment firms, or even as a scholar
You might ask why this list is so short. Yes, it really is because I am not competent to estimate the IQ of people that I have no knowledge of. You may also find it interesting that I didn’t estimate IQ over 200. It is because if the average is 100 and you have a few billion living people (8.1 billion in 2023) the numbers won’t go above 200.
