The big language wall between Czechia and Slovakia

This could be a sequel to “A language is a dialect with an army and navy”. German dialects are much more different than Czech and Slovakian languages.

The Slovakian language is heavily influenced by the Czech one to the degree that it is mutually intelligible.

There were times (during the rise of nationalism) when activists were trying to merge these “two languages” only to Slovaks make their tongue codified.

There, of course, exists a dialect continuum when Czechs living close to the Slovakian borders are told they speak Slovakian, and Slovaks living close to the Czech borders are told they speak Czech.

But imagine if there was a huge wall for one thousand years. Slovakian language would be completely, but absolutely completely different.

But no wall, still a different “language”. Imagine the Czech Republic would consist of Czechs, Moravians, Silesians and Slovaks. But it is just an imagination.
