Humans don’t do things basically because of morality but because of gaining scarce resources or being in a submissive relationship.
So you have cruel correction officers, the Holocaust, genocides, armies ready to do whatever they are ordered to do.
Evolution equipped us with selfishness, not caring (in terms of doing direct intervention) whether a fellow human being dies because he doesn’t have money for acute health problems (yes, this does happen in America).
We have a medical emergency, however, this is a complete novelty and it is for a really brief period of homo sapiens existence.
Someone has to work, the taxes are forcibly collected, forcibly redistributed. The word “forcibly” because otherwise the funds would be stolen.
Sure, human behavior is complex and people are capable of doing altruistic acts. However, in my experience, I have contemplated suicide and asked various people what should I do? The reality is 1 in 4 people replied. Be calm, only human life was at stake.
