People are evolutionarily equipped to be highly vindictive. “Germans can be lucky! We could have killed them all because of what they had done in WW2!” A sometimes popular Czech opinion.
“I wish Vladimir Putin the worst agony that can ever be!” Another popular opinion. When it comes to jail times, most people are for harsh sentences with torture or the death penalty.
Given that logic and taking it to the extreme, the serial killer Carl Panzram who was infamous for his hate of people was right. Because people are highly immoral (they are sinners) even from the common morality standpoint (not to mention systems like utilitarianism). So killing them is an option (in his opinion): “I wish you all had one neck and that I had my hands on it.” “I don’t believe in man, God nor Devil. I hate the whole damned human race, including myself.”
Here we go to the free will question (and I believe there is nothing such as free will). African Americans are not fully responsible because they have such a culture and are discriminated against (racial profiling, disproportional sentences, educational opportunities etc.). So we shouldn’t be mad at them.
But what about the people who are angry at those people who are mad at African Americans? They understand the African-American situation but don’t have an understanding of people who don’t get it.
My opinion is that hate is not a program. We should acknowledge there is no such thing as free will, yet this doesn’t mean we are obliged by morality.
They noticed it centuries ago in the United Kingdom. The sentences were harsh, and prisons were overcrowded with hunger, torture and misery. And guess what? The crime was still flourishing.
The legal system was created by people of IQs higher tens points than regular citizens, intelligent in a broader sense or generalized way and highly educated on the topic that has been met with the scientific approach of best minds before. Factors such as income inequality, poverty, unemployment, discrimination, family background, and homelessness came to the scene.
So don’t be harsh on criminals and people wishing them the worst!
