Totalitarian and autocratical regimes have a lot of experience with supressing dissent . I was born in the democratical Czechoslovakia (the nowadays Czech Republic). And people had a lot to say about how well the communists were good at oppressing dissidents and opposite opinions, stances and attitudes.
However, the current Western world’s establishment, no matter how it claims it is democratic, is very good at killing, silencing, prosecuting, and marginalizing dissent. And it has a huge technological apparatus.
So modern-day achievements can control people with a scaring range.
Supressing dissent in historical communism
The Czechoslovakian communists had TVs, newspapers, libraries, and an entire judicial and repressive system under control. Therefore, grandly suppressing dissent.
No allowed enemy demonstrations, only “samizdat” which was underground written literature or audio pieces. And yes, they banned it and they persecuted people because of it.

What is the political establishment?
A political establishment is an enormous number of clientelist networks that usually mutually interconnect each other.
We have elected officials, bureaus (CIA, FBI, IRS, FDA, etc.), judges so on. But everything revolves around the super-rich.
They own the media, influence politicians and journalists, own the educational system (what to teach, what not to teach), and they control the entire political parties. There are thousands of clientelistic networks that are above other ones.
And since they don’t want to be known and have their richest intact, they must sustain something that people call establishment.
What does it mean? Suppressing any dissent, any opinion, or movement that would threaten them.
Supressing the dissent since 9/11
Terrorism creates an absolutely enormously low percentage of American mortality. No matter how heinous the terrorist attacks on 9/11 were, they cut civic liberties to such a degree that George Orwell’s book became a manual on how to suppress dissent (despite what he meant as a deterrent):
THE USA PATRIOT Act was such an act that made the founding fathers turn in the grave. It allowed for increased surveillance of communications, expanded the authority to detain and deport immigrants suspected of terrorism-related activities, and facilitated information sharing between law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
Increased security measures, creating the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center where they torture alleged terrorists to this day. And last but not least – mass espionage.
They have been spying on every single cell phone call, every bit that came through your computer. And they want to tell us they are better than autocracy or totalitarian regimes?
Suppressing dissent in the age of the Big Brother and who owns the Big Tech?
So do you want to tell the world that Donald J. Trump is connected to one of the most powerful super-rich group in the USA? You may say it, but it will be lost among of billions of information overloads.
Do you still have a chance to highlight it? No way. Because the super-rich own the big technological companies they make your short or long post irrelevant.

Do you want to be a successful writer? The connections to the establishment are a necessity. You must prove to them you are not going against them.
Not to mention they delete social media posts.
Dissent in mainstream media
Of course, mainstream media are not watchdogs of democracy, but only tools how to serve the interest of the super-rich.
I am not saying it is not vital to have media, they can do some job of politics not getting out of control totally. However, given that people are conformists and immoral sheep, they write what their owners please.
Even the journalist who made the Watergate scandal possible admitted no such thing would have happened in the current system as the super-rich exert too much power.
Conclusion
If you are an aware citizen, there is no chance of the truth getting out. Your common citizen is an absolute sheep, no chance will happen despite the population is very discontent with the political situation in general. If I exaggerate it communists were bad at suppressing dissent.
Big Tech controls everything, mainstream media are owned by the super-rich, and civic liberties are cut. You cannot do anything.
Joseph Goebbels and the Nazis were amateurs. You get lost in tons of information, they block your efforts, we all lose.
