Carl Von Clausewitz famously proclaimed: “War is merely an extension of diplomacy.” So it is no surprise that China supports a warmonger (Russia in this case and the Russo-Ukrainian war).
I am certainly fully aware that the Russo-Ukrainian war is not a black-and-white issue.
Brief deep context of the Russo-Ukrainian war
If the West hadn’t organized a coup d’etat called Euromaidan, no war would be basically taking place. Ukraine would be either enormously pro-Russian or militarily occupied by Russia without any greater violence.
98 % of politics is occurring in the background so Putin wanted the constellations to benefit his side.
Feeling cornered by potential Ukrainian entrance to NATO or EU (which would mean missiles within his borders) and being aware of the limited possibility of removing the pro-Western government, he started a war that he believed would be short-lived.
Yet, he had attacked a sovereign country which is despicable.
The world should stop this war, but China supports the warmonger
I will completely omit the possibility of one global government, which would make any wars impossible (or equally, all of the world’s citizens being pacifists). But the world could have stopped the war even at its beginning. So why did this not happen?
Because the extensive patron-client system benefits the USA and its allies, thus the interests of its super-rich groups. And since they are involved in the war, China takes the other stance.
Xi Jinping must have known the whole war was immoral, yet he didn’t do anything that would prevent Russia and mostly China from benefiting from the surrender conditions. Yes, China supports the warmonger: “War is merely an extension of diplomacy.”
The US had supported wars against China
If the US-supported wars were because of democracy or real human rights (not their gutted version), someone may find it acceptable.
But don’t get me wrong! The mere economic and power interests of the US super-rich who rule the country were always the case.
The Pentagon Papers revealed that the main objective of the US war in Vietnam was to contain China rather than fight against communism or help an ally.
The U.S. strategy to contain China has been evident in various conflicts and strategic initiatives throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. From direct military engagements like the Korean and Vietnam Wars to strategic alliances and support for anti-communist regimes in Asia, the containment of China has been a recurring theme in U.S. foreign policy. The Pentagon Papers specifically highlighted the Vietnam War’s connection to broader containment strategies. It revealed how fears of Chinese and communist expansion shaped U.S. actions in the region. So you can now understand why China may have an objective not to stop the Russo-Ukrainian war which is partly a war led by the West against Russia.
The international order and the pushes
China, India, and Brazil are the powers that make steps against the US-led patron-client system.
The US tries and successfully melts into Chinese, Indian, and Brazilian internal politics (by influence or secret services), not to mention the pushes and interactions in the international world order.
So they make purposeful actions that are against the US which may include toleration of a war.
Because the other pushes may start a new war. So here we go back to the original quotation.
Conclusion
While waging war is highly despicable, the current political environment is far from doing that. The mere interests of the super-rich or autocrats from respective sides prevail.
The world is a very dangerous place. And the world’s citizenry takes little effort to stop their raging politicians and their puppet masters.
