Karl Marx’s “Capital” is a work in the field of political economy and has been widely studied and influential since its publication. And its consequences besides academia and intellectual circles? Millions of extrajudicial killings, gulags, famine, and repressed freedom of speech, but also alleviating the negative attributes of capitalism: full employment, solid salaries, free healthcare, and so on (basically welfare state).
Now let’s go back to history! Governments (or ruling elites before the central governments were created) weren’t so pervasive. The first printed press challenged the monopoly of the elites and contributed to the spread of new ideas. Even though the 19th century brought relative freedom of the press, Marx was censored in enormously populous and powerful countries such as France, Prussia and Russia.
However, the past scholars were so attracted to Marxism (or its main published works) to the degree that it even successfully faced academic repression.
But how come such a new great work cannot be influential in our times? The super-rich groups have existed even at the times of Karl Marx. Now, we have extreme information overload in a massively controlled technological system where extreme surveillance exists. Big Brother is everywhere and the major secret services have their people everywhere (either an agent or their person).
For example, the greatest power (USA) is exerting such massive soft power (even the hard) that is impossible to come up with great ideas that are threatening the establishment.
You can go and search for new Capital but it would lie on the last pages of searching. The control of media is deeper. As one of the Watergate scandal journalists admitted, it would be impossible to make that leak now.
You may object the movement “Me too” hasn’t been started by the establishment (it was actually threatening people connected with the establishment), but the “Woke” movement definitely possesses fingerprints of the background elites.
Of course, everything can be published now (even new Capital) but you will get the utmost ignorance from the establishment and its puppet tools.
Dear Karl, you had such an honor of having been born sooner.
