Imagine a completely different country than the Czech Republic is, better in all of aspects – big salaries, great flawless people that you like all of them, excellent justice system, orderliness, communist-like social net, capitalistic profits, very polite politics. A completely different world.
I used to hold British people in high regard unless I realized they were so similar to Czechs. As a young pupil, I considered Brits very good, decent, polite and intelligent people who are far better than Czechs. The elementary school English textbook was so attractive for someone who was degraded as a communist scum, subpar to most of the nations.
For someone who doesn’t believe in the “g factor” (IQ), young pupils score low in adult IQ tests, and as they get older, they score higher. And that’s the deal.
I took a scientific approach. I imagined the Czechs and the country. Their flaws, their assets. I tried to avoid fallacies, cognitive biases, and formal logical mistakes. Then I started observing the UK and its people and adjusting to the Czechs, so the British became adjusted Czechs. And it was something horrible.
I realized the British are somehow the same – non-intelligent, inept to vote for good politicians, corruption-prone, easily manipulated by media, vindictive, evil even from the stupid and obsolete good-evil fairy-tale dichotomy, uncaring of the utmost basic human rights, practicing the patron-clients system from the bottom of the society to the top.
Needless to say, I realized there is an evolutionary-given personality that all nations share despite their cultures – homo sapiens are selfish, aggressive, vindictive, have mating preferences, practice reciprocal altruism and so on.
But the title is kind of confusing. I said the English are the least bad (comparing the other nations) and yes – they are more polite, reserved in terms of what they say and how they say it, not racially hateful or racist, their culture can produce better politics, economy and educational system. Better than the vast majority of countries.
So, Dear Professor Dawkins, you enriched me in grad way, but know what, I don’t like the British either. Or wait – people in general. As Tomáš G. Masaryk said – hate is not a program. So I take it back.
